Ted Cruz half-jokes about making Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson UN Ambassador

Speaking to an audience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina today, Ted Cruz suggested that the rabidly Christian Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson’s lack of political correctness suggests that he’d be a great choice for Ambassador to the United Nations for a President Cruz.

As Cruz said, quoted by CNN:

“You know there’s a reason he terrifies the mainstream media. He says the things you’re not supposed to say. He actually remembers who we are as Americans and just speaks it with a joy, not with an anger, not with a hatred, with a joy in who we are…How much would you pay to see the Russian ambassador’s face when Phil says, “What is wrong with you people?”

I’m willing to let Cruz’s nod to Idiocracy go. It was a joke. Ha ha. What I’m not willing to let go of is the fact that Ted Cruz seems to be suggesting here that he agrees with the sorts of things that Phil Robertson says.

And so on.

Ted Cruz is right that these are things “you’re not supposed to say.” That’s because these things are horrendously bigoted and, contra Cruz, are in fact incredibly hateful. Robertson may take joy in being abundantly mean to people who don’t happen to be white, conservative and Christian, but that doesn’t make him worth celebrating.

Unless you’re Ted Cruz, who thinks that saying these things is part of “who we are as Americans.”

Once again, we’re left in a situation where Ted Cruz has endorsed something completely insane that someone endorsing him has said, and we’re left to wonder whether, if asked, he’d disavow their statements. I’m not holding my breath.

This is Ted Cruz’ version of the Ayatollah and would love to have him in his cabinet or as an “ambassador” to be able to present to the Middle East to show them that we too, have our own “bearded wonder” to front. The only problem is that Iran’s Shiite verson is well educated and actually more intelligent than Phil is, even though Phil graduated with a bachelors degree. He, like his sons, put on this homey bumpkin act because it sells to the dim-witted who are actually like this.

  2. UncleBucky says:

One does not joke about things like this, Calgary Cruz.

Thus: The man is mad as a hatter.

  3. Buford2k11 says:

    Unka Bubba? Dat ewe?

  4. BeccaM says:

You are totally correct about his sons though: They were a bunch of preppies who spent the first part of their adult lives pretending not to be from yokel backgrounds…then deliberately cultivated being like their dad again when it became profitable to do so.

  5. Undoc Alien says:

“….are Shotgun weddings still a ritual in them thar hollers’?”

Only if the one what’s knocked up ain’tcher sister.

  6. Buford2k11 says:

What was that Bible verse that went along the lines of…”and the Ducks shall inherit the Earth” or something like that…Duggers and Ducks, are Shotgun weddings still a ritual in them thar hollers’?

  7. Glen Thompson says:

I really feel that referring to Phil Robertson as a star is definitely a major stretch. Perhaps starlet might be more appropriate.

  8. BigGuy says:

    I sit corrected.

  9. BeccaM says:

That’s his sons. This story is about the dumb-as-dirt patriarch of the family who really is as shit-for-brains as he seems on the show. If anything, the show downplayed his bigotry so as not to upset viewers.

  10. BeccaM says:

No, you obviously haven’t seen some of the videos of the patriarch speaking at various public gatherings. His bigotry isn’t even close to ‘scripted’.

Here’s a few examples for you:

  11. BigGuy says:

Nah. Everything he says is scripted and audience tested before it’s cable cast.

  12. BigGuy says:

An ambassador is a gentleman who lies for his country. All the Robertsons have plenty of experience lying to the American public.

They’re wealthy preppies who all went to the right schools and play lots of golf. When one guy’s beard and plain (scripted) speaking worked, the rest of them stopped shaving and joined the act.

  13. Don Chandler says:

yeah, he’s a meddling asshole. I’m glad he lives in a swamp with a chance of meeting his god– a hungry alligator. I’m so use to these bryan fischer types. They keep losing.

  14. BeccaM says:

Nah. He’s just the asshole most people would be mortally embarrassed to have as a family member.

  15. Don Chandler says:

I guess Phil Roberson is America’s version of an Ayatollah–not that we need another one or ten.

  16. BeccaM says:

Phil Robertson is terrifying not because he ‘says things you’re not supposed to say’ but because he’s a hideously ignorant, in-bred, child-marriage advocating, misogynistic, racist, homophobic, xenophobic bigot.

It says a great deal about Ted Cruz that he’d ‘joke’ about appointing this horrific piece of human trash for anything other than outhouse pit cleaner.

I would, however, pay money to see the Russian Ambassador ask Ted Cruz, “What the fuck is wrong with you?”
