Ted Cruz: Black Lives Matter “embracing and celebrating the murder of police”

Well I guess someone wasn’t getting enough attention.

In Iowa earlier today, Ted Cruz told ThinkProgress reporter Kira Lerner that Black Lives Matter, a decentralized movement calling for racial justice and an end to police brutality, is “literally suggesting and embracing and celebrating the murder of police officers.”

As Lerner pointed out in the write-up of her interview with Cruz, the number of police officer deaths has been steadily declining, while police killings have remained high; for point of comparison, 51 police officers were killed last year in the line of duty, while police officers killed 1,107 people on the job. If anything, Black Lives Matter has encouraged the police to circle the wagons and get more aggressive, not the other way around.

In fact, the one case of violence against the police that Cruz cited — the shooting of Deputy Darren Goforth — has no clear connection to the Black Lives Matter movement. That, of course, didn’t stop Cruz from implying that Deputy Goforth’s death was Obama’s fault, stemming from the broader “vilification of law enforcement” that he claims has taken place during the president’s time in office. As Lerner wrote:

To illustrate his point, Cruz echoed popular conservative rhetoric, saying that crime rates have spiked across the country because police officers are afraid of protesters. The month of July was especially bloody in Baltimore with the murders of 50 people, including 45 African Americans, because “murderers and rapists” were encouraged by the lack of law enforcement, he said.

“If you want to talk about Black Lives Matter, that’s 45 dead black lives,” he continued. “Because of the rise in crime, it was the bloodiest month since the 1960s in Baltimore…The best way to protect black lives is to keep them safe from murderers and criminals who would prey on them.”

Claims that the crime rate is spiking, as well as the accusation that Black Lives Matter is responsible, have been shown to be overblown and inaccurate.

Cruz knows as well as anyone that there’s nothing but upside in going back to the race well in the Republican primary. Trump got plenty of lift going after Mexicans, Ben Carson with Muslims (plus his wink-and-nod to white voters on the Confederate Flag); and now Cruz with black people. As Cruz has positioned himself to be the “Trump, but with an actual campaign infrastructure” candidate in the race, he’s going to have to start peeling off the racist vote from the field’s two front runners.

And what better way to start than by implying that an explicitly anti-death movement is actually encouraging murder?

Black thugs on campus and this kid writer is questioning Cruz? Oh please. I taught 49 yrs. on college campuses and this behavior would get them ousted. They are being driven by leftist progs, MSM, and Dem propaganda. Much of this is being seen now as a fraud. These whiny useless brats give no contributions to their own black communities whose problems are so out of control , white guilty libs cannot even defend it anymore.

Correction: Holder failed to find a case with even the bare minimum of evidence required to present to a grand jury. “Had to prosecute”? He and his staff of crack Federal attorneys would have been all over Ferguson if they had a shred of evidence. They live for that.

  3. Bill_O'Rites_RIP says:

Again, why did Attorney-General Holder not prosecute these alleged crimes? It was his duty to prosecute crimes if there was evidence.

  4. Bill_O'Rites_RIP says:

Why were these egregious allegations not prosecuted?

More than one cop-killer has indicated he killed a cop in retaliation for the cops earlier shooting a black man.

The news media workers incite this retaliatory behavior by deliberately mis-reporting incidents in which a black man dies at the hands of a police officer.

The MB incident provides a prime example. The NMWs continually refer to the thug MB as “an unarmed black teenager,” suggesting the police officer killed MB without good reason.

In fact, MB physically attacked the police officer and then menaced him. In turn, fearing for his life, the police officer shot and killed his attacker. Earlier in the day, MB had conducted a strong-arm robbery in a store.

The grand jury and government investigations found so.

Yet a citizen never reads this factual narrative in the news media.

Later, the NMWs, by their biased reporting, fomented and furthered the violent mobs that resulted from the previous NMW mis-reporting of the MB incident.

This citizen holds the NMWs directly responsible for cop-killings and mobs reacting to police shootings.

  7. Bill_Perdue says:

Cops are criminals. Decent people would insist on the mass arrest and indictment of killer cops and racist cops.

But that would be in vain. Obama won’t do that and neither would any Republican.

  8. FreeSpeechIsntCrime says:

Well done- terrific piece! It doesn’t hurt that it is *spot on*!

  9. mf_roe says:

He doesn’t give a shit about poor whites or most Hispanics either. Like Goebbels his job is drumming the Big Lie into the skulls of the fearful.

  10. mf_roe says:

The American justice system is a farce, it is judgement by checkbook. If your poor you are guilty, if your a cop you can not lie.

  11. Mike_in_the_Tundra says:

Your logic is faulty. Just because African Americans have a higher incarceration rate does not mean they have a higher rate of criminal activity. The truth of the matter is many of the caucasian law breakers are not brought to justice, or get off without jail time, or just dismissed.

  12. mf_roe says:

Is “corn-fed” now a euphemism for full of shit?

  13. Tim Kinnaman says:

Finally police have asserted their authority enough that people are realizing they don’t want to mess with them again. Maybe you aren’t enough of an American to stand up for what is right, but I am!

  14. Tim Kinnaman says:

Go to naacp.org. The rate at which blacks to whites are incarcerated is 6 to 1. Just because there are six times as many black criminals as white does not shout racism unless you are one of those who are racist against anything white. It just so happens that more of them are criminals. Therefore, it would be purely logical to any thinking mind, that the amount of shootings done by police would reflect this same demographic. I’m not the least bit racist, but blacks do often tend more toward violence, and therefore would have to be taken care of. Shut up on your white racism.

  15. BeccaM says:

Tell them that due to all the time he’s been spending in Iowa, Cruz is now thoroughly corn-fed and well-marbled?

Do you truly not know how to use Google for yourself? Or are you just trolling?

The department found that the FPD (Ferguson Police Department) has a pattern or practice of:
    – Conducting stops without reasonable suspicion and arrests without probable cause in violation of the Fourth Amendment;
    – Interfering with the right to free expression in violation of the First Amendment; and
    – Using unreasonable force in violation of the Fourth Amendment.

The department found that Ferguson Municipal Court has a pattern or practice of:
    – Focusing on revenue over public safety, leading to court practices that violate the 14th Amendment’s due process and equal protection requirements.
    – Court practices exacerbating the harm of Ferguson’s unconstitutional
police practices and imposing particular hardship upon Ferguson’s most
vulnerable residents, especially upon those living in or near poverty. Minor offenses can generate crippling debts, result in jail time because of an inability to pay and result in the loss of a driver’s license, employment, or housing.

The department found a pattern or practice of racial bias in both the FPD and municipal court:
    – The harms (as described above) of Ferguson’s police and court practices are borne disproportionately by African Americans and that this disproportionate impact is avoidable.
    – Ferguson’s harmful court and police practices are due, at least in part, to intentional discrimination, as demonstrated by direct evidence of racial bias and stereotyping about African Americans by certain Ferguson police and municipal court officials.

  17. mf_roe says:

Tell them it’s Cruz or Tar Sands not both.

  18. mf_roe says:

Among other things the use of the police/court system as a source of income for the city.
The racial makeup of the police and city government. Just trivial shit like that.

  20. Hammertime says:

so.. black people hate black people so much they kill other black people? I’m not seeing your logic there.

  21. Hammertime says:

Cruz panders to the neo-nazi faction of his party. The far-right. He will never say that black lives matter.

  22. Bill_O'Rites_RIP says:

Can you educate me with some specific examples of what he found?

  23. mf_roe says:

Very disturbing graph, notice how PO deaths decline during economic hard times and increase during booms?

  24. johnlac says:

There are about one hundred blacks shot and killed by police annually. Of course, black cops account for a share of that total. Only a handful of those killings are questionable.
Meanwhile, about six thousand black males are shot and killed by other black males annually. And we’re not counting the several hundred black children who are killed in their home by stray bullets from black males.
So I would say the racists are the people who by far kill the most black males and black children wouldn’t you? But we don’t want to pay attention to facts do we thug lovers?

  25. mf_roe says:

Holder found plenty of racism, he just failed to find a case so glaring that he had to prosecute. Something that he was very consistent about. He was always on defense never offense.

  26. Bill_O'Rites_RIP says:

The American population is aging, which causes a dramatic downward trend in violent crimes, which are committed mainly by young males. Therefore, it is misleading to say that violent crime rates are lower. Crime rates would be even lower if the hate-mongers were not actively fomenting violence with their false allegations of police racism. Attorney-General Eric Holder looked for racism very thoroughly in Ferguson and found nothing but a few stupid old jokes on the police radio by one individual years ago.

  27. Knottwhole says:

    Not classified yet. :)

  28. BeccaM says:

Yeah… only a troll could ignore a 21.7-to-1 ratio and characterize people being killed by cops — many of which suspects were unarmed — as ‘very rare.’

And if the Black Live Matter movement was having ANY effect on the number of cops being killed in the line of duty, would not that number of slain law enforcement officers have spiked and gone UP this year? Instead, 2015 is shaping up to be the 2nd lowest in a very, very long time.

Black Lies Matter is just another Soros funded bunch meant to create as much chaos as possible. Take a look at any of their demonstrations: loud, foul-mouthed blacks up front, backed up by wimpy white kids and their grandma’s who are a bunch of Occupy left-overs. This exact crowd was at the MN state fair celebrating the murder of policemen, chanting “pigs in a blanket, fry ’em like bacon.” Essentially, real scum.

  33. Indigo says:

Clinical pharmacology recognizes a”paradoxical reaction” to medication, a condition in which the opposite of an intended effect occurs with some medications. I wonder whether this Cruz person is experiencing a psychological condition that we could call a paradoxical reaction? He took the evidence and drew exactly the opposite conclusion from the obvious conclusions of a reasonable person. Fascinating! His condition might be an expression of an unstudied psychotic condition.

  34. nicho says:

Correction: Racist troll. If cops were shooting white kids in posh neighborhoods, he’d be the first one attacking the cops.

  35. nicho says:

Shot for good reason — cops are racist trigger-happy thugs. That’s a good reason.

  38. Robert Kerns says:

Comparisons between the number of police killed and the number of people killed by police is asinine. Police are being killed by criminals and except for very rare occasions the people killed by police are criminals and are shot for good reason.
