Santorum will exit tonight

Rick Santorum is dropping out of the 2016 presidential race. He has scheduled an announcement for tonight, where he plans to endorse another candidate.

In other news, Rick Santorum was still running for president as of this morning.

Santorum received just 1,783 votes in the Iowa caucuses, only finishing ahead of Jim Gilmore and “other.”

Deuces.

“Santorum Exits” leaving santorum in his wake.

I am willing to blur the distinction in this case for the sake of what I think we can all agree is one of the better headlines I’ve ever written.

Note that Santorum did not really “exit.” Like other candidates he has “suspended his campaign.” That difference has implications for fundraising and spending. The FEC doesn’t recognize “suspending” a campaign, so candidates who merely “suspend” are free to raise money and spend it as if they were still candidates. They can also keep receiving federal matching funds, if any.

Exiting, or declaring that your campaign has ended, means that you can no longer take contributions and can only spend money to pay off debt incurred by the campaign or to pay for whatever needs to be done to shut down.

You might ask why anyone would want to continue contributing to a campaign that’s pretty much toast anyways. Well, some of these candidates will remain in their elected office, and we all know how well they treat their friends who give them lots of money.

I wasn’t too worried about him getting anywhere, but am still glad that he’s out. Mostly because I have not, and will not, forgive him for the “man on dog” crap he spewed a few years ago. That, and he’s simply not smart enough to be President.

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

In other news, Filene’s Basement has a sale on innovative and fun-to-wear sweater vests…

    Yup, it’s a fun story. I approve :)

The headlines are all that make this story worth reporting, if ya know what I mean.

    Santorum drops out!

  10. Don Chandler says:

Wow, Rick Santorum has dropped out. It’s headline news in the media. Soon we’ll learn Carson is still in the race.

  11. FLL says:

Who will Santorum endorse? Frothy isn’t as stupid as most fundie Christians, so he’ll take note of Nate Silver quoting the betting markets, such as Betfair (link here). Nate Silver is neither stupid nor crazy by mentioning betting markets like Betfair. Rubio’s chances of getting the Republican nomination have indeed doubled and Trump’s chances have been cut in half. Santorum will probably read Nate Silver’s piece, check it out on Betfair, and then endorse Rubio… unless Santorum’s religious fanaticism is so wildly self-destructive that he endorses Cruz, who has absolutely no chance of winning the Republican nomination.

  12. BeccaM says:

Poor Frothy. He even tried to dial down his gay sex obsession a little bit and it still didn’t work.

No, wait, what am I saying? Good riddance to a nutjob fanatic.

  13. BeccaM says:

He’ll endorse Rubio. I’ll lay money on it.

  14. gratuitous says:

Who, oh who will Rick Santorum endorse? An anxious nation waits with bated breath.

    Waitasecond; no, we don’t.

  15. nicho says:

One of these years, he’ll get the hint — nobody likes him.
