The media has dropped the ball on covering the election

Matthew Chapman, who writes over at Blue Nation Review, has an epic tweet-storm up this morning about the media and the election.

You can read through Chapman’s entire litany below — you need to start reading from the bottom, then work your way up.

In a nutshell, Chapman argues that the media is failing us this election.

He notes, rightly, that “they’ve done nothing to educate us on the candidates’ policy (especially Clinton’s). They are only barely covering the candidates’ records.”

And he’s not record. Think about it. When is the last time you heard anything about what Hillary Clinton plans to do as president? You’ve heard a lot about the Trump campaign’s false claims that Hillary is ill and that she’s a “racist.” We’ve also heard a lot about the now-debunked Associated Press story about the Clinton Foundation.

But what about policy? What about Hillary’s approach to the economy, to defense, to foreign affairs, to Wall Street, to economic development? No idea, because the media simply won’t talk about it.

Chapman also notes the media’s love of the false equivalences. And CNN’s hiring of former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, who is still receiving severance checks from the Trump campaign. Corey has been an utter embarrassment, including his outright lie last night that half of the Clinton Foundation donors — that would around 140,000 people — got meetings with Hillary.

And when Hillary finally calls out Trump for a long history of racism — culminating with Trump hiring Stephen Bannon, a man who created and ran Breitbart, the self-proclaimed “platform” of the “alt-right,” a growing white supremacy movement that hates women, blacks, Jews, gays and more — the media calls out Hillary for being “divisive” and fomenting a “race to the bottom.”

The man hired a white supremacist enabler to run his campaign. One of his top surrogates tweets multiple images of Hillary in blackface, then removes one while the other is still live on his Twitter feed. And when Hillary calls him out for this, Hillary is the divisive one.

When you know a lot more about Anthony Weiner’s weiner than you do Hillary’s and Trump’s policy proposals (beyond that stupid wall), we’ve got a problem.

So.. more vague innuendo instead of any specific, verifiable examples of vote rigging? Right.

Also, you’re wrong. Like most reasonable people I concluded that they show exactly what I described, some officials in the Democratic Party wanted the long-time Democrat to win their party election. What they do not show, and what there is absolutely no evidence for, is some conspiracy that they, or the DNC as a group, colluded to rig votes and falsify primary and caucus results so that Bernie would lose. That is what you have suggested.

There is not even any evidence that any of them took any actions to unfairly influence voters in the nominating process towards Hillary, no matter what some individuals may have said or suggested in private emails. A few people at the DNC could not pull off what you are insinuating. Hillary. simply. received. more. votes.

So is that all you have? The DNC emails? What exactly is in them that you think proves your position?

  2. heimaey says:

Apparently you didn’t read the wikileaks emails.

  3. S. Parilla says:

Broad generalizations like this are laughable, but let’s assume for a moment that every last person at the DNC wanted the long-time Democrat to win the party’s nomination, and not the Independent who became a Democrat for better positioning in the race.

It is completely logical and expected that people who work within the party wanted someone who has been a member of the party, who has not denigrated it in interviews for decades, to win the party’s nomination. That’s not ‘rigging’. It’s called ‘having an opinion’.

Having an opinion is not a conspiracy. Even if there was a conspiracy, more people voted for Hillary than for Bernie. This is how voting works. She had more votes and ended up with more delegates than he did, so she won.

Which leads us to all of the accusations of rigging with the vote: prove it. Where was the vote rigged? What states? What districts in those states? What precincts in those districts? How was the vote rigged? Is there some proof of said vote rigging? Where is it? What is it? Who did it? Is there any proof that that anyone at the DNC, let alone the leadership of the DNC, or anyone working for Hillary or on behalf of Hillary, conspired to rig or otherwise fraudulently gain votes for her?

Provide facts (as opposed to innuendo) that any of these conspiracy theories are accurate or have any basis in reality, and then people might listen. Go ahead, we’ll wait.

  4. margaretpoa says:

CT worthy of Alex Jones! The only “rigging” done was when more people voter for her than Sanders or O’Malley.

  5. heimaey says:

Having the whole DNC on her side and rigging the process for one.

  6. HandsomeMrToad says:

Well it might help if Hillary were to give a speech about policy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m for Hillary, and I think she’s staying out of the public eye deliberately, the Clintons are masters of timing and there’s no reason she would need to appear now, but it’s not all the media’s fault.

  7. margaretpoa says:

What did Clinton “get away with in the primaries” for example?

  8. margaretpoa says:

They haven’t dropped the ball. This all according to design.

  9. ComradeRutherford says:

“When is the last time you heard the media report on any of Hillary’s policy proposals?”

Why would the media ever do such an outlandish thing? That wouldn’t help Trump win.

  10. Badgerite says:

Kinda seems that way, a little. He’s statements are juuuuust a bit off the wall.

  11. wfrolik says:

See, until reading those tweets, I *didn’t* know that Clinton was the first candidate to expressly include autism rights in her platform-and as someone on the spectrum I consider that highly relevant.
I *had* heard she’d mentioned mental health issues, but of course no one’s bothered to talk about that at any length, (or ANY of her other policies whether they’re good or bad,) because we all need to talk about Anthony Weiner. ‘
It’s not just the bias…it’s the lack of any *substance* that gets me.

  16. Badgerite says:

Along those lines, New York Times reporter Jo Becker interviewed Julian Assange on Wednesday and he “accused the press of supporting Hilary Clinton, whom he likened to a “demon”.
And here speaks our progressive hero of transparency and liberal values of good governance and truth.
“The American liberal press, in falling over themselves to defend Hilary Clinton. are erecting a demon that is going to put nooses around everyone’s necks as soon as soon as she wins the election, which is almost certainly what she is going to do.”
Uh huh. So, is that what is wrong with the Clinton Foundation and why it should be “shut down”.
It puts nooses around peoples necks? Oddly enough, I heard that it did just the opposite.
But if you “shut it down” there are people who lives will, indeed, be adversely impacted and perhaps lost thanks to the great liberal and progressive concern of someone like Assange.
He is such a frigging phony. I always thought he was. And this election he has proved it.
He is not now nor has he ever been about liberal or progressive or transparent or good anything,
He is about power. Mostly his.

  17. Houndentenor says:

There are a few and they mostly work in print with an occasional tv appearance when they break a big story. The Spotlight team, for example. Nick Kristoff’s reporting from Darfur about a decade ago now. Things like that. It still happens. But someone who sits behind a desk and predicts what’s going to happen next is not a journalist. A journalist goes where the story is. And they sure as hell aren’t in any press conferences or relying on unnamed sources inside the government (who are mostly manipulating them by controlling the narrative…Judy Miller, for example. A treasonous hack, that one.)

  18. Zorba says:

The media had the ball many years ago. Edward R. Murrow. Walter Cronkite. And a few others. And I will give credit as well to Woodward and Bernstein for their Watergate reporting.
But other than that, there are no “real” journalists left any more.
They are all media whores and publicity hounds.

  19. Badgerite says:

Well if Clinton is a “racist” then why is she getting 80-90 percent of the Black vote and the the Trump Monster gets what,,,,Zero, last time I checked. Hint: It might have something to do with the fact that every white racist organization on the planet seems to think they have found their ‘savior’ in trump.

  20. GlennF says:

This is nothing new for the mainstream press/media.

Don’t forget how they handled the 2004 election and helped get Dubya re-elected.

And how they’ve allowed and even abetted eight years of Republican and Tea party obstruction of government during the Obama years

For whatever reason, the mainstream media/press has been thoroughly corrupted.

The Democrats are fighting on TWO fronts in this election. On one front against the Republicans & Donald Trump and on the other against a feckless and corrupted mainstream news media.

  21. heimaey says:

How so? Hillary & the DNC got away with quite a lot in the primaries and were still treated like they did nothing wrong. Trump has been getting way too much attention – from the start. The media is interested in a Clinton/Trump race and has been since last fall. They’ve help orchestrate this.

  22. S. Parilla says:

    …in today’s false equivalency news.

  23. Houndentenor says:

To claim the media dropped the ball implies they ever had possession of that ball. Trump got the celebrity VIP treatment for an entire year and the media outlets were happy to give him all the time he wanted and hardly challenging anything he said because it got them ratings and clicks. Is there a single news media outlet left with a shred of integrity? I’m trying to think of one and can’t. Perhaps some print newspaper somewhere? They stood by and watched this happen and now are shocked at the result? Mika Brzezenski is now acting all high and mighty even though she spent a year catering to Trump’s every whim on her tv show. Where was ethical standard back then? It’s too late now. The damage is done and she played a big role in it. It’s time to call out these so-called journalists on their incompetence and willingness to shill for horrible people.

  24. BeccaM says:

As a writer, I’m saddened beyond measure that essential discourse and rhetoric have had to be reduced to a “storm” of 140 character tweets, which we readers are expected to re-order chronologically until what’s being said makes sense.

  25. heimaey says:

If the media did it’s job neither Trump nor Hillary would be running.
